Dear Member

On Friday 6 March, during Working Women’s Week, NZNO members are invited to wear something purple for Pay Equity.

NZNO wrote to the Chief Executive of Te Whatu Ora seeking support for members to participate.

Te Whatu Ora has now replied to NZNO and confirmed it can support the wearing of purple where it is linked to International Working Women’s Day awareness.

Any attire must not include political or industrial messaging and must comply with local uniform, safety, and professional standards.

To be clear:

  • This is not strike action

  • No strike ballot has been conducted

  • Members are not being asked to breach uniform policy

For members on visibility strikes

NZNO members in Canterbury and Te Tai Tokerau are currently undertaking visibility strikes. Members who are covered by a visibility strike notice have the right to continue their visibility strike on Friday 6 March. These members may want to incorporate purple into their visibility strike for this day.

Why wear something purple on Friday

NZNO members in every sector were directly affected when our 13 Pay Equity claims were cancelled. For Te Whatu Ora nurses, the removal of the extended review mechanism means your pay equity position cannot be reviewed or re-raised for 10 years under the amended law - until 2033.

This is a simple, collective action to make our work visible, valued, and politically unavoidable in an election year.

If you choose to participate, wear something purple on 6 March in line with local workplace requirements.

This is Maranga Mai in action — every nurse everywhere standing up for fairness and the value of our work.

If you have questions about what is appropriate in your workplace, check with your local delegate or organiser. You can also contact the Member Support Centre 0800 28 38 48.

Ngā mihi,

Paul Goulter, Chief Executive
Tōpūtanga Tapuhi Kaitiaki o Aotearoa NZNO
